Customers flock to NWA Lancaster for its popular Monday morning sale.
SPRING LAMBS
A short entry after last weeks Easter show, selling to £174 and 378p/kg for Texel cross and Suffolk cross from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham.
CAST SHEEP
A plainer show of cull sheep generating a very respectable average of £130. Continental ewes sold to £248 for Texels from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton with others to £214 from JW Thwaites, Tebay and £210 from M Beresford, Kirkby in Furness. Other mediums were £160 to £180, with the smaller end £130 to £150. BFL sold to £237 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale who also sold medium Mules to £158, with other smaller end Mules £130 to £140. Cross bred hill ewes sold to £144.
Cull rams to £155 for Beltex from G Beresford & Son, Kirkby in Furness.
PRIME HOGGS
As promised additional buyers in attendance and keen to return again, attracted by the quality and quantity consistently forward at this popular Monday morning sale.
An SQQ average of 319p/kg today, with 75% of the sale being heavy weights averaging 310p/kg and super heavies 290p/kg, all in a market average of 305p/kg to include hoggs with mature teeth.
Top of the sale today was Beltex cross hoggs from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd, Hambleton selling at £183 and £182, with others £180 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. Well bred and finished heavies were generally £162 to £175. Best of the heavies were 350p/kg from SH&LE Birkett, with others 320p/kg to 340p/kg.
Standard weights sold to £167 for Texel cross from AG Butler, Hambleton with others £166 from KA Purtill, Wigan and most £148 to £162. KA Purtill, Wigan topped the section selling Beltex cross at 385p/kg, with others 382p/kg from M&S Purtill, Wigan. Better end hoggs were 345p/kg to 365p/kg.
Hill bred hoggs sold to £174 and 335p/kg for Cheviots, £164 and 356p/kg horned, £153 and 322p/kg Mule / Masham.
Hoggs now cutting their teeth are now required to be identified and sold separately this week, selling to £154 and 314p/kg.
BREEDING SHEEP
Still plenty of interest in sheep with lambs at foot. Strongest singles sold to £310 (£155/life) for Texel cross ewes with Texel cross lambs from J Shanley, Nateby with a ring full of four crop plus Cheviot Mules with singles Texel lambs to £252 from Stockdale Farm, Sedbergh. Mule ewes with singles sold to £305 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock who sold Masham and Mules ewes with twins to £330. Several hill ewes forward today saw Welsh ewes with Texel cross lambs at £192.
